Friday 28th November @ The Plug (Neutral) Yes, Paul Daley was half of the (really) legendary duo of Leftfield, whose “Leftism” album was groundbreaking, seminal and completely awesome (and “Rhythm and Stealth” was pretty amazing too). They teamed up with Sex Pistol frontman John Lydon to produce the first truly successful dance/rock crossover “Open Up”, they created tunes that were still shaking dancefloors at Urban Gorilla ten years after they were made (“Check One” for example), they soundtracked the greatest advert of all time (tick follows tock follows...lots of horses in the sea drinking Guinness dumderdudumderdudum etc) and they played one of the greatest gigs I've ever seen when they toured a soundsystem so bassy it destroyed ceilings of venues. In short, Leftfield were truly incredible, and we're incredibly proud to be bringing one of the duo to UG for the first time. Paul's no slouch on the DJing front either, having held down a residency at Fabric for many years, and torn up dancefloors at major clubs and festivals across the world. His current style is described as electronically infused Techno and modern-Acid House, connected by the all important element of funk. Sounds dandy doesn't it? Juan McLean is a somewhat different type of legend. The type of legend that was a guitarist in an excellent US punk-funk group called Six Finger Satellite, who were on the Sub Pop label made famous by Nirvana, and for whom LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy cut his teeth as a sound engineer (he devised a PA setup nicknamed “Death From Above” from which his label DFA takes it's name). The type of legend who subsequently quit music, but was coaxed back in by Murphy, and ended up making incredible, label-defining records for DFA under the guise of a robot. He's an odd type of legend, basically. For this rare UK (and debut Sheffield) appearance, Juan will be playing a “DJ Set with Live Acid Performance” involving “a 303, MPC and various mixers, filters and delays to produce the Acid set, and a crate of records to DJ with”. Hold on to your socks kids, as this promises to be something special. One of the not quite legendary yet UG residents will be on hand to get things pumping early doors, and there may just be one of those afterparty things at the leg-end of the night (it's a bit beneath the arse end). It all looks set to be, well, legendary. Don't miss. |
